Chap Sweat

Age: 38

City of residence: St. Marys

Current title: Attorney

Place of business: Sweat Law Firm LLC

Professional responsibilities: Manage the operations of a local law firm specializing in real estate, wills, estate planning, and business formations. For real estate transactions, I perform title examinations, solve any title issues that may arise, and conduct all closings. As I solo practitioner, I have many responsibilities, but I could not do it without our great staff.

I also draft wills, powers of attorney, medical directives, and business operating agreements. Occasionally, I will make it into the courtroom, but litigation is not the focus of my practice.

Accomplishments/Honors: Licensed to practice in the State of Georgia; Leadership Camden Class of 2024

Community Involvement: Member of the Board of Directors and chairman of the Finance Committee for Habitat for Humanity of Camden County.

Why did you go into your particular field? My father was an attorney in Waycross, so I grew up around the law. When I went to law school at UGA, very few graduates moved to South Georgia. Most went to metro Atlanta. I wanted to move back to South Georgia to provide the residents in this area with the exceptional legal service they deserve.

As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up? NFL Quarterback

What was your first job? Checking real estate titles in my father’s law office. I also lasted one day working on a cricket farm, if that counts.

What is the best advice you’ve ever received? My contracts professor in law school encouraged us when we followed the news to not simply complain about the actions of the leaders in the community and nation. Instead, we should monitor what they do, understand why they made their decisions, decide where they went right or wrong, and determine how we would make better decisions when we ourselves are leaders.

What’s your favorite thing about your job? Purchasing a home can be a daunting task, particularly for first-time home buyers. I especially enjoy sitting down with people buying their first home, answering their questions, and ensuring they are comfortable and have confidence going forward with home ownership.

What do you know now that you wish you knew when you first started your career? How great everything would work out in the end. After graduating, I bounced around several firms and towns for my wife’s job before we were finally able to settle down here in Camden County.

Who do you consider to be your greatest mentor and why? My father taught me most everything I know about being a good attorney and person.

When you’re not at work, what do you do to relax? Spend time with my wife and daughter somewhere by the water or at a UGA football game.

What is something about you that most people don’t know? I have not missed a UGA home football game since 2003.

How do you hope to grow in your career? Continue to learn how to best manage my own practice to provide our clients in Camden County and South Georgia the best legal services, striving for an easy and efficient client experience without sacrificing the quality of our work.

If you couldn’t do what you’re doing now, what would you be doing? I would likely be a teacher (history or geography) and/or coach (football or soccer).
